Multi-eventers Nafissatou Thiam and Thomas Van der Plaetsen have been nominated for the female and male Golden Spike Award. The Golden Spike Award goes to the Male and Female Athlete of the Year in Belgian athletics. It is a tradition for the Belgian Athletics Federation to organise a poll to designate the laureates.

Thiam, still only 20,  was a high jump finalist at the IAAF World Indoor Championships and claimed the bronze medal in the heptathlon at the European Athletics Outdoor Championships. This season she also tallied a national record mark of 6508.

Van der Plaetsen enjoyed early-season succes when claiming the bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships behind world recorld holder Ashton Eaton (USA) and Belorussian Andrei Krauchanka. His total score of 6259 ranks him in the top 20 of the all time world rankings.

The laureates will be revealed during an official ceremony at the Brussels city hall on Monday November 24th.
