19-year-old heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam yesterday won her 1st Golden Spike Award at a ceremony in the beautiful city hall of Brussels. The Golden Spike Award goes to the Male and Female Athlete of the Year in Belgian athletics. It is a tradition for the Belgian Athletics Federation to organise a poll to designate the laureates.

After being named Belgian Athletics Rising Star of the Year award in 2012, this is the first time Thiam has been named Belgian Female Athlete of the Year,

In the male category, decathlete Thomas Van der Plaetsen who won the World University Games and set a personal best twice this year, claimed the Bronze Spike.
