Heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam and decathlete Thomas Van der Plaetsen were awarded the Golden Spike Award at a ceremony in Stayen, a brand new multi purpose venue exploited by STVV Sint-Truiden. The Golden Spike Award goes to the Male and Female Athlete of the Year in Belgian athletics. It is a tradition for the Belgian Athletics Federation to organise a poll to designate the laureates.
For Thiam, who claimed a momentous Olympic gold medal in the heptathlon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with a world-leading NR of 6810 points, it is the fourth time in a row she has been named Belgian Female Athlete of the Year.
After making a successful comeback to the international stage in 2016 by winning gold at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam and by taking 8th place at the Rio Olympic Games later on, Van der Plaetsen was awarded the Men’s Golden Spike.
