Today the Wings For Life World Run was announced to the public at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium. Stefaan Bettens, the CEO of Jet Import together with Belgian Ambassadors of the event Marc Herremans and WAFEL athlete Nafi Thiam were present to introduce the unique event set to take place on May 4th in Ieper.

The Wings For Life World Run is the first event in which the entire world can race together, simultaneously. This groundbreaking race format means that on the 4th of May 2014, at 10am UTC, and equivalent times across the globe, thousands of competitors will start to run on up to forty courses worldwide. On this day the world will run as one.

100% of the proceeds from the event will go to the Wings for Life Foundation, which funds research into curing spinal cord injury. The run will unite athletes around the world, in one race running for those who can’t!

In Belgium, the event will be supported by former triathlete Marc Herremans and multi-event talent Nafissatou Thiam.

“I am extremely excited to be an ambassador for this unique event” says Thiam.  “Thousands of people from all around the world, from first-timers to professional athletes, will be running at the same time, with the mutual goal to help raise awareness for spinal cord injuries and I am looking forward to doing my part in mobilizing as many people as possible.”

Thiam broke the  indoor world junior record in the pentathlon (not ratified), was crowned European Junior Champion in the heptathlon, setting a national senior record in the process. She placed 14th in the heptathlon at the World Championships in Moscow and concluded the 2012-2013 athletics season ranked as the #1 junior in the world.

Other ambassadors for the event include, British former 110m hurdler Colin Jackson and Formula 1 racing driver David Coulthard.
